Playing Sports While Wearing Braces
Braces are an option for most patients, and compatible with a majority of lifestyles. Still, certain activities, such as sports, should be deliberated by patients who are preparing for orthodontic treatment. Here is a look at how braces can be worn while playing sports.
Sports and Conventional Braces
Braces are indeed an option for patients who play sports, but special steps should be taken by patients who participate in contact sports, such as football. In these cases, our dentist may recommend a customized mouthguard for protection. This mouthguard will cover the braces so that the inner cheeks are not abraded in case of facial impacts.
Invisalign for Athletes
Invisalign is worth considering for athletes who want the best protection from oral injury during orthodontic care. Made of smooth plastic and absent of brackets and wires, Invisalign aligners will not cause damage to the mouth during contact sports. They are also removable, so they can be taken out to play, if absolutely necessary. Furthermore, Invisalign Teen includes extra aligners so that replacements are available if any are damaged. However, Invisalign also has more restrictive candidacy requirements compared to metal braces, and not everyone makes a good candidate.
Any patient who needs braces and plays sports should discuss their eligibility and concerns with our dentist before choosing a treatment. At a consultation with our braces dentist, Dr. Allen Sanders, patients can learn more about the risks of playing sports with braces and what options are available for safety.
